I’ve had almost a lifelong fascination with the historical Vlad Dracula, and that naturally extended into an interest in the world of vampires. But the appeal was never in the darker, more monstrous aspects of their existence, but their immortality – just think how many lifetimes you could have, how much you would get to see and to if you had an eternity. So my tastes went more towards Anne Rice (oh, how I loved Lestat) than Stephen King.
But my interest waned, as these things sometimes do. And now, the only remnants of my vampiric obsession are what remains of my once extensive vampire library, my bat tattoo, and my cat Mina (Khayman, my first vampire-namesake cat, died a year ago). But I admit, a part of me is still fascinated, and always will be. From time to time I’ll still read a vampire tale, like The Historian or Anno Dracula.
When I first saw Twilight in the bookstores a couple years ago, I was intrigued by its cover and title, but when I read the synopsis, I dismissed it as a piece of YA vampire fluff. But in the last few months, so many bloggers have sung the praises of this novel, that I figured I would see what all the fuss was about. I’ll warn you right now. I’m about to rave (and rant a bit) about Twilight and its sequel, New Moon, so if you haven’t read these books but plan to – well, consider yourself warned:
*** MINOR SPOILER ALERT***
Reader Discretion Advised
I picked up my copy of Twilight from the library last week and set it aside, then ended up reading it in one day. The story of Bella and Edward had me enthralled from the moment they meet until the last page. Obviously, it’s a novel targeted towards a younger audience, and there’s nothing too deep going on here, but still – I loved it. I instantly empathized with Bella, particularly with her clumsiness. As someone who is quite accident prone (I blame it on my Sagittarian sign – we’re known for our two left feet), I laughed and shook my head many times at things I could see happening (or have happened) to me. The tension between Edward and Bella is electric, and sustains the 500+ pages of this book. True vampire aficionados may be disappointed by the lack of focus on the vampires themselves, but really, Twilight is all about the intense love between these two.
So, after racing through that book and knowing there was a sequel out, I couldn’t wait until a library copy became available and went out the next day and bought New Moon – and read that in a day as well. Since Edward is not present for most of the novel, I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as Twilight, but it still held me in its thrall and I couldn’t stop until the last page – wondering all the time when the heck Edward was going to come back! I admit to getting fed up at times with Bella’s neediness towards Edward and Jacob. If I was Edward, particularly in some of the last scenes in New Moon, I’d be a bit exasperated with her lack of faith in him or their love – the girl seriously seems to have some self-esteem issues. But then I guess when you’re comparing yourself to a beautiful immortal, you’ll always come up short.
So okay, these books are YA vampire fluff, but they’re well written, extremely entertaining and have me hooked.
Needless to say, I can hardly wait until Eclipse is published! And since film rights have been optioned, there’s a very real possiblity all us Twilight fans will get to see Edward on screen – yowza! It’s OK for me to think a 110-year old teenager is hot, right?
Bookie has some great posts about these books, and continues to post info about the series, helpfully tagged (it’s thanks to her that I finally caved and read these books). And a discussion about Twilight will be taking place later this month over at Overdue Books if anyone would like to join.

I really enjoyed Twilight, but still haven’t read New Moon. Must get on that!
Oh yes, you must! There’s a lot more going on in New Moon, interesting stuff!
It is perfectly alright to think Edward is hot – I do too! I loved the fact that New Moon left many possibilities wide open. I really don’t know what is going to happen in Eclipse and I can’t wait to see!
Okay, good – I was feeling like a bit of a perv, hah! I will be rushing out to get a copy of Eclipse as soon as it comes out. And did you see the book she’s writing from Edward’s POV?
I have never been a big reader of vampire tales, but I have read a few different books here and there. I agree that the Meyers books were very entertaining. I checked them out from the library but am contemplating buying them in paperback. I liked the first more than the second as well. Have you gone to the authors website and saw the list of actors she’s like to act in the movie?
I sure did – she’s picked some great actors. I hope she gets her wishes granted, at least some of them. Have you read The Historian? It’s a vampire tale without too much emphasis on the vampire.
I was scared to read New Moon at first. When it first came out big Twilight fans were saying it was not that great. I didn’t mind it, though. I really enjoyed this series so far, very entertaining! New Moon can be disappointing to people that look for romance in their novels. I don’t, so I was fine, but I can see the other side of the picture as well. The third book is supposed to be out in August, so mark it on your calendar. (Although, I personally prefer Libba Bray to Meyer’s…)
I liked how New Moon had so much going on in it, and how she delved deeper into the character of Jacob, but I did miss Edward! And I have to agree with you on Libba Bray – I can’t wait until her next book comes out.
Thanks for the plug Lesley. I just added some updated info about Eclipse, the third book due out August 7th.
I’m so glad you enjoyed these books. They are just really fun….and join the crowd, I think we all have a big crushes on Edward!
I’ve been reading your posts – I find them a great way to keep up with the latest on this series! I can definitely imagine all the teenage girls reading these books and falling in love with Edward – and Jacob too, for that matter.
Vlad’s house is for sale! Do you know anyone currently castle hunting?
Ooh, I didn’t know that! Here’s a link, if anyone besides me is interested: http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/story?id=2782064&page=1
Glad you liked these! I had some of the same annoyances you did, but I’m still hooked.
I adore Stephenie Meyer’s website. She’s so down to earth and fun to read about!
Agreed! I loved reading her account of how she wrote Twilight and the journey to get it published.
I don’t read much vampire fiction, but I’m intending to read “Twilight”. A vampire novel that I really liked was Robin McKinley’s “Sunshine”. I plan on rereading it eventually.
I haven’t read Sunshine, but I enjoyed her books based on the Beauty and the Beast fairytale: Beauty and Rose Daughter. Have you read those?
OK, yet another one I’m going to have to check out when I get back into the swing of reading (i.e. trying not to fall asleep with a bottle in one hand and a baby in the other.) I, too, had a long row of black paperback book spines of all my Anne Rice vampire books once. I loved those guys (Lestat, Louis, Armand, etc.) but then one day I was just done and sold most of them to the used bookstore. I did keep one that Anne Rice signed and also a first edition of Violin. Did you like the Interview with the Vampire movie?
Hello new mommy!
I think the last one in the series that I bought was the one about Armand. I had them in hardcover but sold them off to a used bookstore, but I did keep my battered mass market paperbacks, more for sentimental value than anything else. I boycotted the movie when it first came out, and said I would never watch it. But then it came to a dollar theater and I went – and ending up loving it. As much as I hate to admit it, I think Tom Cruise was an awesome Lestat. You?
Yes, I loved Tom Cruise, too, as Lestat. It’s good they did the movie when they did because I don’t think he’d be able to pull it off now. I also loved Brad Pitt in it and, back when the movie came out, I was still a huge Christian Slater fan left over from my teenage days. I can’t believe Kirsten Dunst was so young in that movie. Anyway, yes, I loved it, too. I even went to see Anne Rice’s house in the Garden District when I went to New Orleans a few years ago. And then one day, my vampire feelings just faded away, but I still want to read the Twilight books.
I remember the only portrayal I was really disappointed in was casting Antonio Banderas as Armand. He was supposed to be a young man, innocent looking and Antonio just did not fit the bill. I think you’ll enjoy Twilight.
I loved the Historian, Twilight, and New Moon, but I want to read someting else. Do you guys have any suggestions!! Please help! I am leaving for a long trip realllly soon and I need a book to read! thank you!!!
If you’re looking for vampire fare, check out Anno Dracula (you may have to borrow that one from a library since I think it’s OOP) and while it’s not vampire-themed, Libba Bray’s YA novels ‘A Great and Terrible Beauty’ and ‘Rebel Angels’ are wonderful.
Omg. I loved both books. I pretty much can’t wait for her other books. But it annoys me how when I read it no one was interested now everyone always comes up to me and is all Have you read Twilight?? And I say yes of course. Its getting on my nerves. -Bri
Well, on the upside, at least now you have more people to talk to about the book!
