Stephanie Meyer’s books are like a bowl of potato chips. I can resist for awhile, and in fact, with her latest, Eclipse, I did – waiting a few months after its release to get a copy from the library. But like chips, I can’t just read one chapter. I have to devour the whole book, even when I know it’s not good for me. She’s sort of the Dan Brown of YA lit – she may not be the best writer in the world, but she’s a great storyteller.
The Good
I have to say, and I know I’m going to get a lot of flack for this, that I think I actually like Jacob better than Edward. Being the vampire fan I am, I find this hard to believe even myself, but Jacob has so much more dimension and complexity to him as a character, while Edward is remote and inscrutable. I’m glad Jacob gets so much airtime in this novel, and found myself rooting for him even when I knew he’d be disappointed and hurt in the end. For me, the relationship between Bella and Jacob is so much more real, more substantial, than Edward and Bella’s inexplicable, instantaneous, “you-are-my-everything-and-I’ll-die-without-you” love. I know it’s Edward and Bella’s story, but Jacob’s is becoming much more compelling.
That said, I’m glad Edward was present for so much of the novel, one of my chief complaints with New Moon.
I also like that Bella began to think of the consequences of becoming a vampire. In New Moon, it seemed strange to me that she was so willing to give up everything in her life and her future – including her family – for Edward, without any qualms or hesitation. In Eclipse, she actually starts thinking and questioning what becoming a vampire will mean.
The Bad
Bella is willing to give up so much in her life, including her family, yet she has this very weird aversion to marrying Edward. With all that becoming a vampire entails, she’s worried about how her parents and friends will react to her getting married? If she’s going to discontinue contact with them anyway, why do they even need to know she’s married in the first place? It’s not that I think girls should rush off and get married right out of high school, but Meyer never really satisfactorily explains this for me. It just comes across as an obviously-manufactured device for stretching the story out into more books.
Edward and Jacob both do some pretty controlling, manipulative things to Bella, which she either blames herself for or forgives almost immediately. Jacob’s can somewhat be attributed to his youth, but Edward’s been around awhile—he should know better. And Bella needs to strengthen her backbone and stand up to both of them for more than two seconds.
The Ugly
Bella’s “I’m not worthy” attitude. Get over it, already! This is something that has annoyed me since Twilight, and it just keeps dragging on throughout the series. Ditto her “I’ll die without you” attitude. Ugh, ugh and ugh.
_________
Even though the book and its characters frustrated me, I still read it practically in one sitting, and I’m still looking forward to reading more in this series, although I don’t have nearly the amount of anticipation as I did after finishing Twilight. My patience with Bella, and her story, is starting to wear a little thin.
P.S. After writing this post, I went onto Amazon and read a bunch of Eclipse reader reviews, and it’s so interesting to read the range of views. Some of what I liked about the book, others despised. Some of what drove me crazy, other fans wanted more of. Some readers felt very strongly about things that never occurred to me. And some people are taking what is a piece of brain candy – much like Dan Brown’s stories – and taking it much too seriously. Stephanie Meyer’s books are a superficial treat, not a weighty meal.
P.P.S. I’ve decided to count Eclipse as one of my Armchair Traveler challenge books. Here’s why:
- The Northwest US, with its famous climate, is an integral setting for the series.
- I used to live in Vancouver, BC and would love to visit that part of the country again someday.
- I’m behind on my own challenge.

I haven’t yet read Eclipse (plan to soon) but also couldn’t figure out at the end of New Moon why she didn’t jump at the idea of marrying Edward. I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that this is a way to continue the story. All in all, I really enjoyed the first two and am looking forward to reading the third.
Yeah, that really stuck in my craw, so to speak! I’m still planning to read the next one, but like Eclipse, I’ll wait to get my copy from the library, rather than going out and buying it.
This is exactly how I feel about these books – superficial treats! I’ve loved them, even though aspects of them (the whole “die without you” thing, Bella’s complete lack of any personality other than being in love with Edward – what does she actually do in her spare time?) irritate me immensely. After “Eclipse”, I’m not particularly looking forward to the next book – but I’m sure I’ll end up reading it anyway
And there’s nothing wrong with a treat once in a while! I’m still looking forward to the next one, if just for the hope that things finally get wrapped up.
The things that annoy you sound just like the kind of stuff that would annoy me. That being said, I am still interested in giving these a try someday. I saw that they had a nice 3 volume gift set in the bookstore the other day.
They are definitely worth reading. I’d say at least give Twilight a try, and see if you want to go on from there. Another plus is that even though they appear long, they’re actually quite quick reads, so it’s not like you invest a lot of time in them. I’ll be curious to see what you think if you end up reading them!
YESSS! Finally someone besides me really likes Jacob! I love the realness of their relationship, and I just wanna snuggle up with him tent-sytle. hehe Space heater, anyone?
I know, right? I’m glad someone else has come out as a Jacob fan; I was expecting some verbal lynchings on that one.
I’m an Edward fan but my patience really wore thin with all of them in the third book. I didn’t like Edward and Jacob very much and Bella just annoyed! I am going to wait to hear reviews on the fourth book before rushing out to get it.
The only time I rushed to get any of these books was after reading Twilight, I went out the next day to buy New Moon (luckily it had just been published, so I didn’t have to wait). Bella has annoyed me since Day 1, although I think it culminated in New Moon, probably because the focus was so much on her.
I share your opinion on these books, although I haven’t read #3 as of yet. I, too, am a Jacob fan and look forward to seeing how these relationships all pan out. I’m going to wait a bit longer before I start in on Eclipse, though. I got very weary of the drama in New Moon. Bella can be quite annoying!
She can, indeed! I don’t think she’s *as* annoying in Eclipse, just because the focus is not on her all the time – most of the time, but not all.
“She’s sort of the Dan Brown of YA lit”
lol… I can’t decide whether that makes me want to read her stuff more or less! So far I haven’t gotten around to it.
Hah, true – that could definitely be a plus or minus depending on your POV. I’ve only read two of Dan Brown’s books. TDVC, of course, and then Angels and Demons. I didn’t really like my second experience, so have no interest in reading anything more by him. I’m sure some would say the same for the Twilight series.
I feel like reading your review gives me permission to start this trilogy. All my friends wrinkle their noses when I mention it, but I’ve wanted to read it for a long time now. After that, I swear I’ll read Anna Karenina.
Hey, it doesn’t always need to be highbrow lit on our reading stack. As far as I’m concerned, reading is for enjoyment as well as edification, so enjoy!
I’m with Andi — I like Jacob SOOO much better. And, like Iliana, I’m waiting to read reviews before I get the fourth. I may get it anyway, just for completion’s sake, but I’m not going to do any rushing out.
I like your chips analogy, though.
Yep, that’s pretty much how I feel about it!
Lesley! You read it! I feel just like you do about it: my patience is kind of wearing thin, but I still like reading them. It’s so funny, I wrote a pretty long review about it on Amazon, and it sparked off this HUGE discussion, which was very cool. I wonder if you read it? It has sections like yours does, and I think it’s the top review right now. Anyway, I hope things at work are going well! Merry (soon-to-be) Christmas!
~Jessie~
Jessie! Sorry I missed you at the office the other day. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Funny, I read that review when I went to go look at Amazon after writing this post, and it was one I thought most closely matched my own feelings on the book. (I noticed your ‘good/bad’ sections, too
) Little did I know it was written by you! You certainly did instigate quite the discussion. Some of those Twilight fans can be pretty rabid.
Yes, yes, yes! I read your post and I thought, finally, someone who feels and thinks as I do! You put words to exactly what I was feeling. I have always liked Jacob better, couldn’t figure out what was so great with Edward, and could not relate to Bella’s infatuation with him. I did enjoy this series though! It was a really fun read.
Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I don’t see the appeal of Edward. He is an amazingly attractive immortal, after all.
But at the same time, I completely understand those in the Jacob camp. Have you seen the t-shirts that say ‘Hot Dog’? I want one!
when i finished reading twilight, i couldn\’t wait to go out and buy New moon…AFTER i read New moon… i can\’t wait to read ECLIPSE just to get the bad taste the 2nd book left out of my mouth. i just really, really want to read eclipse but unluckily for me, i can\’t find it in any of the bookstores here. i\’m hoping some of you, fans, would be able to point me to the right direction there.
anyway, i just can\’t really understand why bella doesn\’t jump up and down and demand an engagement ring. it\’s pathetic. i want to know why ms. meyer made it like this..it\’s like trying to stretch the whole thing further that it becomes absurd…she\’d be willing to die for him yet she won\’t marry him? and i don\’t think that her \"contemplating\" on the consequences of becoming a vampire substantial..i feel she\’s just turning into a lousy character.
but it would terribly disappointing if after all the procrastination of BELLA and Edward…they still don\’t end up together in the end. that\’ll be really stupid.
i might as well find this edward and steal him from this stupid spineless bella.. jacob can have her..then he can slash her to pieces when he too gets annoyed with her..hehe
nonetheless, i love the series and my curiosity oon what happens next is driving me crazy! help!
